A Loire Valley Vineyard

IN THE LOIRE VINEYARDS – TALKING WINE IN LE PUY NOTRE DAME!

A recent photo of our guests out in the vineyard, giving their holiday an added value in terms of French Loire Valley wine culture – what a nice idea!

They went with Brian to enjoy the magnificent views around Le Puy Notre Dame and no better place for an introduction than in the local vineyards. The grapes are now well formed on the vines. It was an enlightening visit learning how the vigneron grows and manages his vines whilst looking at the stony soils that give the wines their flavours and the main grape varieties on some of the patches of vines on the slopes around Le Puy Notre Dame.

Amongst several wineries visited was our old favourite the Domaine de la Paleine, a 32 hectaire biodynamic award winning winery around the corner from our home and gites at Le Clos des Guyons  After an extensive visit around their wine chais explaining the processes involved and then walking into the vast underground galleries of caves finishing in the important bottling room, Brian explained the Domaine’s many appellations and conducted a tutored wine tasting for everyone from a selection of their wines and vintages including naturally our village’s own wine appellation, Saumur Puy Notre Dame!

Our guests left with plenty of wine knowledge, wine vocabulary and a few cases for the boot of the car  – a lovely talking point for the family back home and memory of a good holiday!

Santé and bon dégustation!

Sheila

Angela, Andrew, Jan and Bernard, have been returning wine guests since we moved to the Loire Valley in 2001, so naturally they were welcomed with a few glasses of chilled sparkling Saumur Rosé Brut ‘Method Tradionelle’  bubbly after their journey from the UK!

We do so love their comments in our guest book and this one made us feel happy! It said:-

“Another superb holiday in your beautiful part of France! Le Sauvignon is a lovely comfortable gite and your friendly hospitality guaranteed a memorable holiday which was all too short! Many thanks to you Brian for the private Wine Tasting and Tour of the local vineyards which was easily the most enjoyable and interesting one we have ever experienced. We are glad we didn’t miss that! We spent lovely days at interesting places such as Fontenvraud and Montsoreau but sadly eventually ran out of time so we will have to return! Hope the car suspension can cope with all the boxes of wine”!  Voila and Au revoir!

They enjoyed their week’s wine trail around the Loire vineyards and really did struggle to get their boxes into the car!  But as they explained it was for a good reason, as Angela and Andrew’s daughter was getting married next month and they wanted to have the Loire Wines for the big day!  Nice idea!!

…….. wishing everybody a really Happy Easter Weekend and some warm sunny days!

Why the Saumur Wine Producing Cooperative was re-branded “ROBERT ET MARCEL”

The new label of the Saumur wine co-operative

The new label of the Saumur wine cooperative

The ‘Caves des Vignerons de Saumur’, Route de Samoussay, Saint-Cyr-en-Bourg   is the Saumur Cooperative, about 12 kilometres from our gites at Le Clos des Guyons and a  real must visit for our guests during their holiday!  The tour begins with a large, twelfth century vaulted cellar and from there it continues in the maze of 100 kms of underground galleries. Indeed an underground ‘safari’ and great place to visit, taste and buy wines of the region.

And now a change! If you did not know – everyone is talking about their new brand name of “Robert et Marcel”.

Initially we thought why would they want to call a Cooperative Cave Robert and Marcel but apparently the reason for the new name is that Robert and Marcel Neau  were the names of the founding Chairman and Director back in 1957 and hence the Cooperative wanted to put this story forward.  Marc Bonnin  became President of the winery in January 2013.

The new name was unveiled on November 14th 2013, so  with continual quality improvement over the past few years and a respectable haul of medals, a new logo and new marketing strategy, they have chosen this concept to be at the heart of their new strategy whilst all employees are now  apparently called Robert or Marcel!

At first, the new brand will apply to wines sold in the basement of the Cooperative at Saint-Cyr-en-Bourg, which annually hosts 56,000 customers a year, the biggest individual selling point in the Val-de-Loire (10% of turnover of the cooperative, or  2.5 million€ ).

Afterwards the label Robert and Marcel will be available throughout region in 2014 through Alliance Loire, responsible for marketing the wines of the cooperative, and finally at the national level in 2015.

Good Luck to the new initiative!!

A bientot!

“MEILLEURS VOEUX” AND HAPPY NEW YEAR FOR 2014!

Two generations of wine makers

Happy New Year from ourselves with Robert and Jeanette Guyon and Franck Bimont. The old and the new winemakers at the Domaine des Guyons in Le Puy Notre Dame.

A Happy New Year  to you all from Le Clos des Guyons!

It’s true that the 31 December in France marks the last day of the year but it also marks the beginning of a very long night of eating and drinking!  The New Year’s Eve called ‘Saint Sylvester’ celebrations are between friends as Christmas was for the family.  And so last night there was another food orgy in local restaurants and village salle de fetes, with  all the decadent food ‘encore‘ of foie gras, oysters and many bottles of Saumur wines including Crémants de Loire!  Traditionally Saint Sylvester finishes around dawn with Onion Soup, that is if you have the stamina to keep going that long, usually in Le Puy that will be  5.00 or 6.00 am!  And, on New Years Day, it’s not over in Saumur and Angers as many restaurants continue working with a specially prepared ‘Menu du Fete‘!.  Another guarantuan meal if you are up for it.

This period is  followed by Epiphany and the tradition of sharing the ‘Galette des Rois’ – or known also as the ‘Twelfth Night Cake’ or ‘King Cake’ celebrating the arrival of the Three Wise Men in Bethlehem. This cake is in all French Boulangeries and is made of puff pastry and has a small porcelain hand painted charm called the féve hidden inside.  The cake is usually filled with frangipane (a cream made from sweet almonds, butter, eggs and sugar) but it can be fruit or chocolate and is shaped as a crown  with a cardboard gold paper crown placed on the top.  Whoever the lucky person is to find the little féve in their slice of cake is then named King or Queen of the New Year and wears the gold paper crown – it is then that persons turn to buy a cake and repeat the occasion.  January is a very sociable time and endless aperitifs are going to be held with the Galette des Rois accompanied by glasses of Coteaux du Saumur and delicious bubbly from Saumur.  Ah a wonderful tradition!  The sparkling wine houses in Saumur are many and include the prestigious Gratien and Meyer located high above in the cliff rocks on the route to Montsorea and Ackerman, Langlois Chateau, Bouvet Ladubay to name but a few in Saint Hilaire Saint Florent, just outside the centre of Saumur,  so you see we are really spoilt for choice and all these alongside Le Puy’s fantastic fizzy sparklers as well!!  All are well worth a visit when here in the region!

Brian, Claire and Liz doing the first wine tasting of 2014

Brian, Liz and Claire doing the first wine tasting of 2014 in the first week of January.

We had our first winery visit in 2014 this week! Here is a picture of our guests at Le Clos des Guyons, Claire and Liz from the UK, enjoying an afternoon with Brian on a wine tour and tasting in the cosy and chic atmosphere of the tasting room at the Domaine de la Paleine! As ever, many wines were sampled from their diverse and superb range.

Hoping you have enjoyed some memorable wines over the festive period and here’s to a Very Happy and Healthy New Year to everyone!

We are looking forward to welcoming both old and new guests to our home in 2014 and sharing some interesting Loire wines together.

For now bon apetit!

Livre d’Or “Best of all was Brian’s Wine Tour and Tasting”!

Salut!
This week we had the great pleasure of welcoming Robert and Maxine from Massachusetts, and Leah and Benjamin from Washington DC, USA to Le Clos des Guyons.
Wine Tasting in the Loire

Wine Tasting in the Loire

Connoisseurs on many French wine regions, this was Robert and Maxine’s twelfth visit to France.
They arrived eager to sample the Loire Valley wines and spent an afternoon at the Domaine de la Paleine in Puy Notre Dame, one of our favourite wine producers, under the professional guidance of Brian who talked them through the appellations and diverse range of wines.
What a great afternoon with lots of ‘favourite’ wines including the fabulous Casta Diva with its stunning flavours of oak, tropical fruit, lemon and honey- apparently a perfect match for their lobsters in Massachusetts, so sad they can’t take a case back home with them!!
Also during the week Benjamin and Leah celebrated their tenth wedding anniversary and so we opened a ‘special’ bottle of 1990 Chenin Chez Robert for aperitifs on their arrival.
They left a few comments in our Livre d’Or.
Sheila and Brian,
“We all have had a wonderful visit to the Loire Valley.  We enjoyed visiting the Troglodyte Villages, Saumur, the Mushroom Caves. etc., but the best of all was Brian’s Wine Tour and Tasting where we discovered the wines of the region!  The food and wine of this area was a revelation!  The accommodation was excellent and a wonderful base from which to explore the region”.
Thank you. It made us happy to read your kind comments and It’s been a pleasure to welcome you all to Le Clos des Guyons in Puy Notre Dame!
Santé!

GUEST VINE AND WINE TASTING GROUP!

Salut!

Wine tasting

In the tasting room, left to right:- Brian, Marc Vincent (owner of the Domaine de la Paleine, Le Puy Notre Dame) Peter, Denise, Sam, Janet, John, Barbara, Geoff and Claire with the red hat! (I am behind the camera taking the picture)!

“The sun shone all week, the wines at the Paleine were wonderful and our hosts were … well hospitable. Thank you Brian and Sheila for your wonderful gites and friendship. We enjoyed the wines – thank you for your knowledge Brian” (guests quote by Geoff and Claire from Sutton Coldfield).

“What a lovely week for the weather, lovely sunshine all the way, along with the wine tasting” (guests quote by Denise, Peter, Sam, Janet, Barbara and John from Coventry).

It’s a busy summer season at Le Clos des Guyons!  After lunch we arranged to take our guests on a private wine tour and tasting in the vineyards of  Domaine de la Paleine, a prestigious and highly regarded award winning biodynamic winery just around the corner in the heart of the Saumur Puy Notre Dame appellation.  With gorgeous blue skies and very hot temperatures we strolled into the vineyards. The vines  looked very vibrant and abundant with grapes at this time of the year (just another few weeks now to wait for the vendage and after a sizzling hot summer we are all looking forward to some fantastic wines to enjoy)!  During our visit Monsieur and Madame Vincent, the owners of the Domaine, offered us all a very warm welcome along with staff and, of course, Blackberry their friendly Alsation.

In the vineyards

Brian explains the parcels of vines, limestone soil of this region and pruning techniques!

Then after touring the vast underground caves of the Domaine (by flashlight on this occasion due to a temporary electrical fault), we headed into the tasting room to start sampling a whole range of appellation wines and vintages (25 …  I think we lost count … just so many)!   The Loire Valley is the only wine growing region in France which produces high quality wines in every style. Red, white and rosé, still and sparkling, from dry to sweet.   In fact, whatever your taste buds desires, there is always an excellent Loire Valley wine to suit!

At the end of the afternoon our guests gave Brian a spontaneous round of applause for his guided wine tour and  expert knowledge of wine, followed by a second applause to congratulate Monsieur Vincent for his exceptional quality wines and hospitality.

Bravo!  We had a really enjoyable afternoon together!  And afterwards?  Well ……… it had to be a short walk up to the Cafe/Bar for non alcoholic refreshments!

Salon des Vins et Terroirs à Thouars (79)

Wine tasting

Tasting glasses at the ready

Another busy week at Le Clos des Guyons  progressing with lots of spring cleaning and painting.  However, despite these chores, we find life is really never dull around here!

Last Saturday morning, saw a blue sky and 19 degrees midday sunshine in Thouars, when we visited the 66th Salon de Vins in the Orangerie at the Chateau des Ducs de la Tremoille with104 viticulteurs from various regions and 50 appellations. We went along with our friends, Robert and Jeanette Guyons, en route to a family birthday party in Louzy where these family events are reknown for being very long but very entertaining, so we were looking forward to it!

On arrival, the entrance to the  Salon had been decorated lovingly with lots of plants and foliage and wine barrels!  We had been invited by Frank Bimont to visit the Stand at DOMAINE DES GUYONS from Le Puy Notre Dame which naturally we all had an interest in, especially Robert being it was his family Domaine!

In the picture below :- Brian, Frank Bimont (current winemaker Domaine des Guyons), Sheila, Robert Guyons (retired winemaker of Domaine des Guyons), wife Jeanette, and a rare picture of us altogether at that, a reminder of the vineyards history and many years of hard work  by retired vigneron Robert and the current winemaker Franck Bimont (and ourselves who bought the property when Robert retired and have continued to enjoy everything about it including the maison, wine chai and history in rue du Moulin, Le Puy Notre Dame)

Two generations of wine makers

Ourselves with Robert et Jeanette Guyon and Franck Bimont. The old and the new winemakers at the Domaine des Guyons

We first tasted the Saumur Blanc ‘Vent du Nord’ from the vineyards in rue du Moulin and ‘L’Ardile’,a lovely golden coloured wine – on the nose violets and smoke with a note of toast; this a powerful and substantial wine. Then followed a Saumur Rouge ‘Odyssée de Franck Bimot’ 2009, a deep garnet coloured red with intense notes of red and black fruits which evolved in the mouth to a long rich finish a good bottle and  lastly we were treated to a glass of Coteaux de Saumur ‘Cuvée des Dame’ 2003, a luscious honeyed wine with a nose of fruit desserts, rich and unctuous – perfect for aperitifs or with chocolate.  Our wine tour guests at Le Clos des Guyons can vouch for these wines which they have tasted during their stay.  There is an opportunity if you are coming to France wine tasting this year, either staying with us in our holiday accommodation or visiting the Loire region, to join in with us on one of our wine tours and tastings.  See our website http://www.closdesguyons.com for details.

We couldn”t get around all the exhibitors, there were so many interesting regional wines but we did our best with more tastings of local Thouarsais wines plus Saumur, Anjou Village, Saumur Champigny, Chinon, Bourgueil, St Nicholas de Bourgueil.

We sampled the Souzay Champigny from Domaine des Cordeleiers, always a warm welcome from Madamme Ratron but by now it was running into lunchtime and we had to leave but not before one last tasting which was a local aperitif called ‘Duhomard’ and there is a story to this which apparently all actually started as a joke.

Sardines from St. Gilles Croix de Vie.

Sardines from St. Gilles Croix de Vie in Brittany. One of the simplest and tastiest of fish dishes BBQ, salt, lemon – done!

Back in 1921 Emile Diacre, a broker in wine and spirits, was taking part in a fishing contest in the Argenton river in the Deux-Sèvres. Feeling a tug on his line, he pulled it out of the water and much to his surprise discovered… a lobster!  His friends weren’t shocked, however, as they explained that they had played a practical joke on Monsieur Diacre, placing the poor crustacean just where he would hook it!  In the end, though, it was Emile who had the last laugh – four years later he invented an apéritif which he called Duhomard in honour of his lobster catch. It is still going strong today, and proudly recognised as an original product of the Thouarsais region. There is even a brotherhood to protect the drink, called the Confrérie du Duhomard!  It’s a mix of alcohol and quinquina bark, gentian roots and soft and bitter orange peel. The fruit is macerated in alcohol for quite some time, and the resulting drink is both bitter and sweet. It comes in a red, white and cherry, the white being sweeter than the red with the cherry having more of a tang. It is mostly drunk neat with ice or with a slice of orange, lemon or lime or is used in cocktails.  A nice one to try!

As we wandered through the Salon des Terroirs to the exit,  it was amazing to see so many different foods ranging from tantalizing cheeses, fois gras, bread of all shapes and sizes, baskets and baskets of oysters from various regions, sardines from  the ville de St Gilles Croix de Vie, charcuteries from Corsica and jams and chutneys made from secret recipes by Les Delices de Flo (The Delights of Flo) in the village of Le Puy Notre Dame!  Before leaving we bought some oysters and sardines from St Gilles Croix de Vie and unusual charcuteries from Corsica in particular a very long black sausisson which looked rather like a huge vanilla pod, I think it’s call Figatellu and apparently it is made from the famous black pigs of Corsica which live in a semi wild state stuffing themselves full of acorns, walnuts and the various herbs from the Maquis.

Oysters Galore

A superb display of Oysters from Brittany. We bought some of the largest. Sadly I can’t eat them because of an allergy but Brian reckoned they were amongst the meatiest and sweetest he has ever tasted.

The visit had been superb not to mention taking advantage of that sunshine too.  We found the welcome and conviviality from all the exhibitors heartwarming  and they showed a  passion and love of their region which was a joy to see.  It is one of our favourite wine fairs and already diaried for another visit next year!

So, onto the village of Louzy where Sandra and Jacques were celebrating their Anniversaire de Marriage and Sandra’s 75th Anniversaire!

We had a  bonne fete starting at midday and finishing late into the night eating many many plates of food and drinking copious glasses of aperitifs, wines, eau du vies not to mention flutes of sparkling wines and chinking of glasses for the endless toasts in between accompanied by singing traditional songs to Sandra and Jacques at the head of the table!  Sandra’s friend, Giselle, shared the same birthday too, so we had to toast and sing everything twice!!!  Mais, c’est la France!

What a day, as I said it’s never dull!

On that note we wish all our guests, family and friends a happy holiday weekend.

WINE NEWS FROM ‘DOWN UNDER’ FOR DOMAINE DE LA PALEINE, LE PUY NOTRE DAME

Vineyard Tour

Vineyard Tour

Our Australian guests, David and Carolyn Van Dort, whom we welcomed to Le Clos des Guyons in October this year have notified us to say they have recently read an article in the Travel Section of the MELBOURNE JOURNAL 25/11/12 on places to visit in the Loire Valley France, where it mentions beautiful Montsoreau, Chateau de Chaumont, the Royal Abbeye de Fontenvraud but were then surprised to find it included a paragraph entitled SIP (quite appropriate)! which says;- DOMAINE DE LA PALEINE. “In the heart of the Loire Valley near the magnificent Notre Dame du Puy this family owned vineyard set amongst 14ha of vines is a MUST-SEE!!!”  Actually it’s 35 hectares not 14, but hey!!

From an article entitled, "The Insiders Loire Valley".

From an article entitled, “The Insiders Loire Valley”.

During their stay, Brian took David and Carolyn to the Paleine on one of his guided wine tours and tutored sessions , along with our other guests Jim, Alexandra, Neil and Judith from the UK during their stay here and so the article was of special interest.  La Paleine is one of Brian’s favorite wineries to visit because they not only have a clear reputation for the quality of their wine but, between the owner Marc Vincent and the winemaker Patrick Nivelleau, they have created many different cuvées which enable Brian to show and explain the whole gambit of local wine.

Well our guests certainly have fond memories of a great visit which they mention in our visitors book , to quote:-

“The wine tour and tasting was so informative. We will be much more informed about our wine selections in the future”!

Here are a couple of photographs (the top one is of everyone having an informal walk around the vineyards and the second one was taken afterwards in the tasting room).

Thankyou David and Carolyn for sending this article!

And to all those Melbourne Journal readers out there – do take the advice of your local paper and come and enjoy our charming village of Le Puy Notre Dame and  its vineyards.  Brian will be happy to advise and escort you!
